Page 2 — Recording a Script

Now that you have specified the options that you wish to use for recording a script, it is time to create some scripts by recording your actions. You may start the record mode in one of three ways:

  • Record a New Script
  • Append to an Existing Script
  • Record a New Script and Start an Application

HighTest will prompt you for the name of the script to create or append to when you select one of these options. By selecting to Record a New Script and Start an Application, HighTest will then display the following dialog window.

Here you will specify the name of the application, the working directory and how you want the application started up, Minimized, Normal or Maximized.

If you choose Normal, you will have the option to Save Coordinates so your application with always start up with the same size in the same location.

Once you have completed this, HighTest will minimize to a small floating window called the RecordBar.

This window, which floats on the screen, provides you access to most of the commands that you would want to access from the HighTest menu. You can select to capture some or all of the screen (full screen, application window, select a window, or select a region), capture the window’s internal details, capture a file, add various commands such as StartApp() or WaitWindow(), add a comment, use the Window Inspector and suspend recording. With HighTest minimized to the RecordBar, you may now start creating your script by having HighTest record your actions. As long as you are in record mode and regardless of the application that you are using, HighTest will record your actions and convert them into script commands. With the Convert Mouse Movements to Objects option turned on, HighTest will attempt to identify what was just clicked on and convert the mouse commands into high-level object commands that are much more concise than a series of mouse commands and become independent of the location of the object on the screen. If HighTest cannot find a control, or cannot determine what it is, it will record the mouse movements directly so that the script will be an accurate representation of what you did during the record session.

When you have completed your test, click on the suspend recording button on the RecordBar and HighTest will stop recording and load the script into an edit window. You can then end the record session, or add additional commands to the script.

After you have determined that you are done recording, click on the End Recording button on the toolbar and HighTest will switch into Edit mode which allows you to modify the script, playback a script, view screenshot or window detail information and much more.
